I found this property online and thought a lot about its potential prior to actually making the trip out to Wyoming to take a look. After seeing it in person and making an offer, I sat down and drew this sketch. The basic concept is to add some bold, modern, 'soaring' architectural elements while retaining the basic, rustic, cabin-like nature of the original structure. I'll enclose a portion of the front porches, replacing the current 4x4 posts with something rather more substantial. This will extend and expand the greatroom, and open it up with a cathedral ceiling and lots of windows to take in the spectacular views. The walkout basement, which was previously strictly utilitarian, will become a separate living space for guests.
I'll add a large wooden deck out back (accessible via a new sliding door in the greatroom), and eventually will construct a garage and, later, a barn/stable. Can't really call it a ranch without that!
I'll accomplish this transformation in three distinct yet mutually supporting phases. When executing one phase, any changes will necessarily anticipate what comes next, and what will be the eventual finished product.
Phase I: Make the existing spaces 'liveable' by modernizing both the layout and the aesthetics. New flooring and wood trim throughout; redesigned kitchen with an island/bar seating, new appliances and countertops; remodeled and expanded bathrooms; paint and other appealing visual improvements. The installation of the sliding door and construction of the back deck will serve as a transition between this phase, and the next.
Phase II: Add quantifiable value to the property by creating additional living space. Enclose a portion of the bottom porch and incorporate it into the walkout basement living quarters. Create a kitchen, bath, and other living spaces therein. Then, enclose the top half of that porch section in glass to expand the greatroom.
Phase III: Major construction. Open up the roof to create a cathedral ceiling in the greatroom. Construct a detached garage (perhaps with living space above), and a barn/stable. Due to the sloping, terraced nature of the property, these outbuildings will be below the line of sight from the house, and will not interfere with the views in any way.
Phase IV: ??????? Perhaps purchase some adjoining land to expand the ranch's footprint.
As I complete major aspects of this project, I'll post pictures on the Progress page.
